Didim (Didyma)
The ancient city of Didim also known as Didyma is situated by the beautiful Aegean coast. Sheltered by gentle sloping hills, this beautiful seaside resort is only 75 kms from Kusadasi. According to a legend, the name Didim comes from the word "Didyma," that means "twin". It refers to the twin God and Goddess, Apollo and Artemis, who were supposedly born here. A mythological status to back the natural beauty of golden sandy beaches make your time spent in Didim to say the least, explosive. It is a blend of high adventure and complete relaxation, of the ancient world mysticism and the modern world enticement.
The subtly exciting atmosphere of Didim is almost contagious and once you get there you tend to soak in its slack lifestyle and laid back attitude together with the sun and the sea.
Altinkum, Didim

Altinkum is a beach resort slowly gaining popularity and is only a 20 minutes walk from Didim. However, if you are not too fond of walking you can still reach Altinkum by availing the Dolmus’ along the main Ataturk-Bulvari road. Located between Bodrum and Kusadasi, Altinkum is truly growing up to be a hub of affairs and its friendly locals and their laid back lifestyle is a major pull for tourists.
If seeing is believing then you should see Altinkum otherwise you might not take the word ‘like paradise’ seriously. Golden sands, which is also the meaning of Altinkum, and turquoise blue water is the main reason it is considered as one of the best beaches along the Aegean. However apart from the beach the Adaland aqua park, Altinkum aqua park, Ephesus-roman ruins, and 5 island boat trip are the other activities you can indulge in.
Furthermore, a happening harbor, the Dolphin square and the numerous bars take care of your nocturnal entertainment.
But before you hit the pubs and the clubs you have to take care of your appetite, which is gains momentum after a day at the beach. The Altinkum restaurants take care of that, like the Valentines, Alo 24, Summer gardens, Shady nook, The Grand etc. All the eateries serve delicious traditional Turkish meals at a reasonable price, while some even serve European dishes. The services at these places are impeccable and their hospitality is what stays back in your memory of Altinkum.
DIDIM BEACHES

Altinkum is split into three principal `beach` areas - First (Main) beach, Second and Third Beaches. The First Beach is the focal point for the resort, being the most accessible. Its long promenade gently curves around the bay, encouraging romantic couples of every age, family groups, gaggles of flirtatious boys and girls, to stroll up and down this sociable avenue.
The many bars and restaurants provide ideal stop off points to sit and watch this strolling world. From left to right, and up into Dolphin Square, the choice of eateries is plentiful. Sunbeds and umbrellas can be hired daily on the beach.
Place yourself in front of your favourite restaurant and the waiters will bring your drinks out to you. With drink and food vendors parading the length of the beach at regular intervals, you won`t have to move all day. At night, the promenade comes alive with the fusion of traditional Turkish folk music played live in many of the bars.
Turkish and Western pop and dance music seeps out onto the street from several of the nightclubs that stay open till the early hours of the morning. Yet a little further up the promenade, the evening becomes more tranquil and sedate, with a number of restaurants and bars creating a much calmer ambience - an ambience where quiet contemplation of the fantastic views across the bay are interrupted only by your waiter refilling your glass.
The beach here is long and broad and sandy. During peak season Turkish and English families share the expanse of beach. The shallow sea waters are dotted along the break with young children enjoying their first taste of beach life. Further out groups of gossiping men cool off in the salty waters that reach no higher than waist height for a good hundred or so metres. T
The Second Beach is tucked away behind some of the larger hotels and apartment blocks. Small yet perfectly formed, it is fed by its own many neighbourhood bars and restaurants. The Third Beach is located away in a small inlet a little further round the bay from the main resort.
There are a couple of now infamous restaurants right on the beach that also provide a free bus service that will take you back to you own apartment. There are many more small coves and bays dotted up and down this particular bit of coastline.

Historical Places Didyma
Today Didyma is a small village close to the sea and praised by tourists and Turks on holiday for its golden sandy beaches. The sea however is not the only attraction for tourists, more so the ruins of the famous Temple of Apollo, a superb example of architecture dating from the Graeco-Roman period, and a sign of grandeur of this area, outstanding for culture and art. Even before the arrival of the Ionians, Difyma was a holy place and its oracle was much feared and much attened. The Persian King Xerxes destroyed the temple in 480 B.C. and looted many of the statues and also removed its vast treasury which owed its magnitude to the generosity of Croesus, King of Lydia. Alexander the Great decided to rebuild the temple after his victory over the Persians which had never been completely finished and was still uncompleted under the Romans, probably on account of its enormous dimension ( one hundred and twenty meters long and twenty-four meters wide) . Christianity put an end to pagan rites and festivals and prevented the temple from being completed. Indeed, in one atrium of the temple a basilica was built.

Traces remain of the temple`s base and three Ionian columns standing twenty-five meters high are still upright, out of the original one hundred and twenty. There are also stones from the sacrificial altar and an antique fountain. The interior court, the pronaos and the steps leading to sacrarium can be all be identified. All around there are fragments of statuary such as the head of the Medusa with snakes for hair and fangs for teeth as she was transformed by Athena. Facing the temple there are a few steps from a second-century B.C. stadium where games were held on Apollo`s feast days. A long Sacred Way with colonnaded porticoes, lead from Miletus to the sanctuary.
